Georgia Tech Coach Brian Gregory Plans To Install Fast-Paced Offense

Mar 29, 2011 4:00 PM

Georgia Tech coach Brian Gregory, in an interview with WQXI in Atlanta, said the Yellow Jackets will play at a fast pace:

“Well I think on offense the term we talk about all the time is ‘pace’, we play at a fast pace. It means we will push the ball in both makes and misses, try to attack in the open court, and pace in the halfcourt means that the ball is on the move or it is on the floor being dribble-drove hard to the basket trying to create some opportunities for some other people.  On offense we really emphasize sharing the ball and moving the ball and making the extra pass, really taking great pleasure and joy in creating a shot for someone else.  Defensively, if you watch us play we play with great intensity.  We are a pressure team.  When I say that that is not necessarily a press, more of a pressure team trying to force the tempo with defensive pressure trying to get guys out of their comfort zone disrupting their offenses.  Then at both ends of the court you have to do a great job of controlling the glass.  I know you guys have really talked with Coach Izzo before and that is a trademark of anybody from that program is that you emphasize rebounding.”

Georgia Tech ranked 55th (69.2) in the country in average pace of play this season.

Georgia Tech’s Shumpert To Go Pro

Mar 29, 2011 10:17 AM

Iman Shumpert, who led Georgia Tech in points, rebounds, assists and steals this season, has decided to enter his name into the NBA Draft.

Shumpert announced the news on his Twitter account.

He will not hire an agent, leaving open the option of returning to Georgia Tech for his senior season. Shumpert added that he made the decision before incoming coach Brian Gregory was hired, and did not intend to come off as disrespectful.

Shumper averaged 17.3 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 3.5 assists in 31 games for the Yellow Jackets. He’s projected as a second round pick by most draft outlets.

Report: Georgia Tech Hires Brian Gregory

Mar 28, 2011 10:09 AM

Dayton coach Brian Gregory has accepted the coaching job at Georgia Tech, a highly-placed team source confirmed this morning.
Gregory reportedly will have a news conference later this afternoon to formally announce his decision.

The ACC school has been looking to replace the fired Paul Hewitt, who went 13-18 this season. After Richmond coach Chris Mooney was interviewed Sunday and re-signed with the Spiders, the Yellow Jackets made an offer to the eight-year UD coach.

Gregory, 44, a former Michigan State assistant, had a 172-94 record with the Flyers with five postseason appearances. He's gone just 70-58 in the Atlantic 10, but he has a 12-5 mark against schools from BCS conferences in the last four seasons, including a win over Georgia Tech.

Kenny Anderson Interested In Return To Georgia Tech

Mar 14, 2011 10:23 AM

Former Georgia Tech point guard Kenny Anderson wants to be part of his former school's next staff.

“I know with my inexperience on the sidelines in college I don’t need to be a head coach, but I would love to be a part of the program in some form or fashion,” he said.

Anderson, one of Tech’s greatest point guards, led the Yellow Jackets to the Final Four in 1990 as a freshman. He played one more year, helping the Yellow Jackets earn a No. 8 seed in the next NCAA tournament while averaging nearly 26 points per game.

“Having a face like mine, with all the success I had at Georgia Tech, bringing me back would be a breath of fresh air," Anderson said "I think alumni and boosters would love to see Kenny Anderson back with the program.”

Georgia Tech Fires Coach Paul Hewitt

Mar 13, 2011 1:38 AM

Georgia Tech answered the long-running question about the coach Paul Hewitt's future Saturday when it fired him only two days after another disappointing season.

Hewitt, who took the Yellow Jackets to the national championship game in 2004, muddled through his fourth losing season in the last six years.

"At the end of the day we just didn't win enough games," Hewitt said Saturday. "It's part of the business."
